Getting Started
What is WaterExamPrep?
WaterExamPrep is an independent educational resource for people preparing for water and wastewater operator certification exams.
The site combines free study material, exam-specific Sample Exams and larger Full Practice question banks with progress tracking.
Which exams are currently supported?
WaterExamPrep currently provides preparation for the following Pennsylvania exams:
- Drinking Water General Exam
- Water Distribution Exam
- Wastewater General Exam
- Activated Sludge Exam
- Wastewater Collection Systems Exam

Is WaterExamPrep an official Pennsylvania DEP website?
No.
WaterExamPrep is an independent educational service and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection or an examination provider.
Are these actual certification exam questions?
No.
WaterExamPrep questions are educational preparation questions designed to test concepts, calculations and knowledge relevant to operator certification preparation.
We do not claim that they are questions taken from an actual certification examination.
Study Guide
Is the Study Guide free?
Yes.
The WaterExamPrep Study Guide is available without purchasing Full Practice access.
Do I need an account to read the Study Guide?
No.
Study Guide articles are publicly available and do not require registration.
What does the Study Guide cover?
The Study Guide covers water and wastewater operator topics such as math, unit conversions, hydraulics, pumps, safety, chemistry, laboratory testing, disinfection, distribution systems, treatment processes, activated sludge, solids handling, collection systems and operator responsibilities.
The available library will continue to develop as WaterExamPrep expands.
Free Sample Exams
Is the Sample Exam really free?
Yes.
Each supported exam has a Free Sample Exam. No purchase is required.
Do I need to register before taking a Sample Exam?
No.
You can take a Free Sample Exam without creating an account.
How long is a Sample Exam?
The Sample Exam uses the full question count configured for the selected certification exam.
For example, different supported exams may have 34, 43, 49, 78 or 82 questions depending on the exam selected.
Does the Sample Exam follow the exam structure?
Yes.
The Sample Exam is configured separately for each supported exam and uses the corresponding question count and category distribution used by WaterExamPrep for that exam.
What do I see after finishing the Sample Exam?
After submitting the completed Sample Exam, you receive your score and an indication of subject areas where your performance was weak.
The Sample Exam is intended primarily as a diagnostic tool, so it does not provide the complete paid review experience available with Full Practice.
Will I get different Sample questions every time?
The Free Sample is a curated diagnostic set for the selected exam rather than a large rotating question bank.
Full Practice is the product designed for repeated attempts using a much larger bank of questions.
Full Practice Exams
What is included with Full Practice?
Depending on the product purchased, Full Practice includes access to one or more supported exams and may include:
- large exam-specific question banks;
- repeated practice attempts;
- different question selections across attempts;
- progress tracking;
- greater emphasis on questions previously answered incorrectly;
- completed exam history;
- detailed review of completed attempts.
Does Full Practice show the same questions every time?
No fixed practice test is repeated every time.
Full Practice draws questions from the available bank for the selected exam. The selection system is designed to expose you to different questions over time while giving additional attention to questions you have previously answered incorrectly.
Will I eventually see every question?
Repeated practice is designed to increase your exposure to the available question bank over time, but a particular attempt does not simply work through questions in database order.
Question selection is randomized and influenced by your previous practice activity.
Can I review an exam after completing it?
Yes.
Completed Full Practice attempts can be reviewed from your account history.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, when you use Full Practice while signed in.
WaterExamPrep stores practice information needed to show progress, completed attempts, question exposure and previous results.
What happens to my exam history after paid access expires?
Expiration of paid access prevents new use of the expired Full Practice entitlement, but your previously completed practice history remains associated with your account.
Accounts and Purchases
Do I need an account to buy Full Practice?
You may begin a purchase without first creating an account.
Paid access ultimately needs to be associated with a WaterExamPrep account so that your entitlement and practice history can be maintained.
I already have an account. Should I create another one when purchasing?
No.
If you already have a WaterExamPrep account, use that account for your paid access rather than creating duplicate accounts.
How long does paid access last?
The access period depends on the product.
Current products provide either 180 days or 365 days of access. The exact access period is displayed before purchase.
Is access a subscription?
Current WaterExamPrep products are sold for a defined access period as shown on the Pricing and checkout pages.
The purchase terms displayed at checkout control the specific product being purchased.
Can I share my paid account with someone else?
No.
Paid access is intended for the individual purchaser and may not be shared with unrelated users, resold or transferred.
Pricing and Refunds
How much does WaterExamPrep cost?
Pricing depends on the exam package selected.
Current products and prices are shown on the Pricing page .
Can I get a refund?
WaterExamPrep offers a voluntary 7-day refund policy for paid products that have not been used.
Duplicate payments and situations where we are technically unable to provide purchased access are handled separately.

What counts as using a paid product?
For the voluntary 7-day refund policy, the paid product is considered used once you begin using paid Full Practice functionality.
Creating an account, signing in, reading the free Study Guide or taking a Free Sample Exam does not by itself count as use of the paid product.
Exam Preparation
Does WaterExamPrep guarantee that I will pass?
No.
WaterExamPrep is a preparation resource. No course, study guide or practice system can guarantee a particular certification exam result.
What score should I aim for on practice exams?
Passing requirements differ between exams. WaterExamPrep stores the applicable passing requirement for each supported exam and uses it when evaluating Full Practice results.
In practice, preparing only to barely reach the minimum score leaves little margin for mistakes. Use your results and weak-area diagnostics to identify subjects that still need work.
Should I only practice questions, or should I study first?
WaterExamPrep is designed around both activities.
Use the Study Guide to understand concepts and use practice exams to test whether you can apply what you have learned.
Can exam requirements change?
Yes.
Certification requirements, regulations, reference materials and examination structures can change over time.
Candidates should always confirm current requirements with the appropriate certification authority.
